Dr. Kara Kennedy is a scholar of English, literature, science fiction, digital humanities, digital literacy, and women’s studies, with a BA, MA, and PhD in English. Her primary research focus is Frank Herbert’s Dune series; her doctoral research analyzed the representation of the women of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and their degree of agency throughout the six-book series, and other research has examined the role of names (onomastics) and the spice as well as world-building techniques. Another key research interest is digital humanities and digital literacy, along with the gender gap in STEM.

This blog was started as an academic blog on the recommendation of one of her mentors as a way to share information from conferences she was attending. It became a place to share teaching resources and other thoughts on academic topics as well, and it now publishes content that aligns more closely with the title ‒ scholarship on the Dune series ‒ in the lead-up to the new film and TV show releases in late 2020.
